Energy Reduction

We turned a century home into a modern, near-net zero house.

The Reep House achieved an 86% reduction in energy use and a LEED for Homes Canada Platinum Rating.

Deep retrofits like the Reep House are a key piece of fighting climate change. Homes contribute 18% of greenhouse gas emissions in Waterloo Region.

In Waterloo Region alone, there are over 15,000 homes built prior to 1940, presenting a huge opportunity to take action.

If every one of those homes was retrofitted to the Reep House standard, there would be an annual energy use reduction of almost 816 million kWh (3 million GJ) and a carbon emissions reduction of over 130,000 tonnes — the equivalent of taking 28,000 cars off the road.

The Reep House is currently used for meetings and workshops, and will soon be open for tours for homeowners, students, and other community groups.

Reep House Technology Highlights

Heat Pump Water Heater

A heat pump water heater is an energy-efficient device for heating water using electricity.

Air Source Heat Pump

Air source heat pumps provide efficient heating and cooling using electricity. They're much more efficient than electric resistance heating.

Ground Source Heat Pump

The Reep House features several heating systems, including a ground source heat pump that draws heat from 150m deep wells dug under the house.

Insulation On Display

Insulation is a superhero when it comes to energy efficiency. It can help your home stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Compare all the available types in our insulation room!

Greywater Tank for Toilet Flushing

This system recycles shower water to flush the toilet, which is one of the biggest uses of water in most homes.

A black plastic cube inserted into the ground to assist in water infiltration.

Soakaway pit

Soakaway pits can help prevent flooding by creating a cavity to hold water as it slowly soaks into the ground. Come pour a bucket on ours and see how well it works.
