REEP House is LEED® Platinum

Announced September 16, 2014

REEP House for Sustainable Living has been certified Platinum under the LEED Canada for Homes program, and is among the first few residential retrofit projects to be certified.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program for environmentally sustainable buildings, recognized in over 132 countries.

Certification Levels and Credits

Platinum certification, achieved by the REEP House project, is the highest of four LEED certification levels. The certification level achieved by a project is determined by the number of credits gained by features or actions taken which contribute to environmental sustainability. The REEP House for Sustainable Living retrofit project received 94.5 credits.

Many features of REEP House contribute towards LEED Platinum certification. The eight credit categories and our score for each are as follows:

  • Innovation and design process
  • Location and linkages
  • Sustainable sites
  • Water efficiency
  • Energy and atmosphere
  • Materials and resources
  • Indoor environmental quality
  • Awareness and education

A Third-party Verification of Sustainability

From the early design phase of the REEP House project, achieving LEED Canada for Homes Platinum certification was one of our most important goals.

Certification provides REEP with third-party verification that the principles of sustainability, including those embodied in our strategic goals related to energy and water sustainability, were fully integrated into the design and renovation of the house and continue to be practiced through the operation of REEP House at 20 Mill Street.

LEED for Homeowners

The LEED Canada for Homes Rating System is a good a reference point for homeowners who are planning a renovation or landscaping project and want to improve the sustainability of their home.

Homeowners planning a major whole home renovation should consider LEED certification. This would involve some expense and time spent with the application process, but may be worth it for the third-party verification that LEED provides and for the accompanying promotional value.
