Measuring and Acting Towards Reduction of our Community's Carbon Footprint
Reep Green Solutions is proud to be a part of the ClimateActionWR collaboration along with two other lead organizations – Sustainable Waterloo Region and the Region of Waterloo, and through valuable partnership with area municipalities and local electric and natural gas utilities. Together, community stakeholders and our partners (listed below) championed the development of Waterloo Region’s first-ever community action plan on climate change.
In November and December of 2013, the City Councils of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, as well as Regional Council, unanimously passed recommendations to endorse the Climate Action Plan and commit to a community GHG reduction target of 6% below 2010 levels by 2020. With this plan acting as the collective direction, our community is poised to further our sustainability efforts and together contribute to meeting the reduction target by 2020.
The first step towards developing the Action Plan was completing a community-scale GHG emissions inventory for Waterloo Region. The inventory used 2010 as a base year and included a 10-year emissions forecast to 2020. The inventory revealed that the “carbon footprint” of Waterloo Region was 3.6 million tonnes of C02e through local energy use, traffic volume, waste sent to landfill, and some agricultural activities.
Our community is working together to achieve Waterloo Region’s short-term community target of a 6% greenhouse gas emission reduction by the end of 2020. This short-term reduction target is an important first step toward our long-term goal of an 80% greenhouse gas emission reduction by 2050.
The Climate Action Plan was developed with input from people across our community in order to provide Waterloo Region with a relevant course of action for addressing climate change at a local level. Implementation of the plan will begin in early 2014.
Climate Action Plan
If you live or work in Waterloo Region, you’ll find that you’re an important part of addressing climate change at a local level. The recommendations, actions, and strategies detailed in the Climate Action Plan outline how we can work collaboratively to achieve our 6% GHG reduction target and make our community an even better place to live and work in 2020 and beyond.
