100 Debates on the Environment: Four Ridings in Waterloo Region

Candidates from four Waterloo Region ridings will get the chance to speak about their environmental policies at an upcoming debate being organized as part of the national 100 Debates on the Environment initiative.

A group of 6 local environmental non-profits, with the support of GreenPAC, have come together to organize debates in four hotly-contested local ridings: Kitchener Centre, Kitchener-Conestoga, Cambridge and Waterloo.

This year all eight municipalities in Waterloo Region endorsed the TransformWR climate action strategy , which outlines our community’s pathway to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In addition, all eight municipalities committed to an interim target of a 50% reduction by 2030, brought forward by local grassroots organization 50by30WR.

It’s going to take bold and immediate actions from the federal government to reach these targets.

The environment is top-of-mind for voters nationwide in the current Federal election. A poll by the CBC reported that 32 per cent of respondents nationwide (27 per cent in Ontario) said the environment, including the climate crisis, was the most important issue.

Jointly hosted by rare Charitable Research Reserve, Reep Green Solutions, Waterloo Region Nature, Grand River Environmental Network, Nith Valley EcoBoosters, Sustainable Waterloo Region and GreenPAC, all of the debates will take place virtually on September 8, 2021.
